Who are you and what is your business?
I am Capt. Steve Douglass, owner/operator of Harbor Tours Inc.
Please provide a brief description of your company.
We are Gloucester’s oldest sightseeing company in Gloucester/ Cape Ann. Harbor Tours operates two 40’ vessels. We offer a variety of on-the-water experiences, including a Lighthouse Cruise, Lobstering/Harbor Tour, and an Annisquam River Charter Trip. We also operate a Water Shuttle that connects Gloucester’s two Cultural Districts, Harbortown, and Rocky Neck.
What inspired you to start your business and what keeps you going? (stories, inspirations, skills, etc.)
I took over the business from my father during the early 1980s. In 1969, he had a vision and felt that Gloucester, and Cape Ann overall, was a beautiful area and he wanted to share it with all – as do I!
I particularly love being on the water.
What aspect of your business are you most passionate about? (history, conversation pieces, etc.)
The history of the city, the fishing industry, its natural beauty, and its rugged coastline.
What sets your business apart from other similar businesses? (defining qualities, practices or approaches)
Harbor Tours offers smaller bows and adds personal touches for residents and visitors alike. Our Lighthouse Cruise is the only tour that circumnavigates Cape Ann by boat.
Is there something unique about your business that you’d like to share that most people wouldn’t know about?
We offer Burials at Sea Charters so the family can scatter the ashes of loved ones. The standard charter is a 1.5-hour trip in Massachusetts Bay and concludes with a short tour of Gloucester Harbor. Custom trips can take up to 3 hours, depending on location. We often take requests to travel from Rockport to Sandy Bay, or Gloucester to Ipswich and Massachusetts Bay.
Do you have a goal you want your business to achieve in the next one, 5 or 10 years?
Someday soon, I would like to have a boat based in Rockport.
