Who are you and what is your organization?
Montserrat College of Art in downtown Beverly, MA is a four-year college of visual art, design and art education, with year-round Lifelong Learning programs for youth to adults, several free galleries offering public programs and exhibitions, study abroad, and travel programs. The college was founded in 1970 by a group of passionate visual artists who recognized the expansion and opportunities that new technology was creating for jobs that had not yet been envisioned.
Please provide a brief description of the college.
The college offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in 12 concentrations and 5 minors, including some of our newest areas of study: Games, Toys and Play, Writing & Visual Narratives, and an expanded Animation program. The college educates artists and designers for work in today’s growing Creative Sector.
What aspect of the college are you most passionate about?
The college has alumni who work at some of the largest and most well-known creative companies in the country, including such brands as Hasbro, Disney, Puma, Nickelodeon, Fablevision, Peabody Essex Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art, and more.
Is there something unique about the college that you’d like to share that most people wouldn’t know about?
Montserrat provides more than $5 million in scholarship aid through its BFA program. The college is also home to a large population of first-generation college students and has many Pell-Grant eligible students, who do exceptionally well in our small community with an 8-1 student-to-faculty ratio.
What sets your college apart from other similar colleges?
Montserrat’s small community of 350 students enables both BFA and Lifelong Learning students to receive individualized attention not available at larger institutions. Our shops and Fabrication Lab allow students access to tools and technology that are not readily available outside the creative industries.
Do you have a goal you want the college to achieve in the next one, 5 or 10 years?
The college plans to increase its enrollment in Lifelong Learning programs and seeks the public’s input on what classes they would like the college to offer.
Why do you love the Greater Cape Ann region and doing business locally?
The college supports and is supported by the thriving arts and creative businesses on Cape Ann and North Shore. Artists are welcome to come to campus and take advantage in classes to expand their practices or simply refresh their skills.
As someone doing business in this area, how has or how can the Chamber help your business?
We are happy that the chamber is offering the college this opportunity to tell our story!
