August is here (finally)! The Northshore often presents high-temperature heat waves, opening up the gates to endless Summer activities. Some of us choose to travel, while others prefer a simple stay-cation, and for the rest it’s actually time to work through the busy season. However you will be spending the last month of Summer, keep in mind these four simple tips to protect your health and the well-being of those around you*:
1. Stay Hydrated: Often times temperatures tend to reach all-time highs during the months of July and August. Spending time out in the open, while performing various activities, requires our bodies to consume calories and sweat at a higher rate. Therefore, we should consistently refuel with plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Bottoms up!
2. Apply Sunscreen: Who doesn’t like showing off their silky summer tan? Laying under the sun for hours and roasting through the day can be very relaxing. Just remember to apply sunscreen from time to time. Taking this simple precaution can be a quick solution to avoiding certain skin cancers and early aging.
3. Insect Repellent: Let’s admit it, insects probably love our blood more than we do. Mosquito bites are often annoying, but can also carry various harmful diseases. Pets are known to be easy targets of ticks and fleas. Finding the right insect repellent is a real game-changer. Take a walk down to the nearest pharmacy!
4. Life Jackets: “We’re gonna need a bigger boat”, and more life jackets! Did you know that three children die every day as a result of drowning? * Keeping life jackets on board can come in handy when cruising around the harbor. If you own a boat, it might also be a safe idea to refine your CPR and first aid skills.
