Who are you and what is your business?
Masshole & Co. Pet Provisions, 137 Main St Gloucester, We opened this location in November of 2024, but have been making Masshole Biscuits since October 2023.
Please provide a brief description of your company.

We are focused on providing Gloucester dogs and cats with the highest quality products we can find. That starts with our in-house biscuits, made with whole foods and human-grade ingredients. Our Masshole biscuits include foods your dog will be excited about like house-made parmesan cheese crisps, beef roast, and more!
We also offer our frozen enrichment program which allows you to keep your dogs busy and mentally stimulated without any of the mess or hassle of prepping things like lickmats, kongs, or toppls at home.
What inspired you to start your business and what keeps you going?

We were inspired to take the leap into full-time entrepreneurship after both of us were laid off from corporate remote jobs in the spring of 2023. As for jumping into retail and owning a business downtown…we decided that was the right move when we visited Sue at Animal Crackers and she let us know she had already sold her building. We knew Gloucester needed a pet store.
We keep going because of the community we’ve found and the community we continue to create. Every smile, every happy customer, every happy pup, every question we can answer, that’s what keeps us going.
What aspect of your business are you most passionate about? (history, conversation pieces, etc.)
We are most passionate about building relationships and community. We want our store to be a third space for people. We want our social platforms to be a third place for people. That means that people can come and feel welcomed and they aren’t expected to spend money.

Is there something unique about your business that you’d like to share that most people wouldn’t know about?
Although our name is funny and bold, it is not just a crude joke. The name is based on the shape in which we cut our biscuits. The idea started as a pandemic hobby and the only cookie cutter we had in our tiny apartment was one shaped like Massachusetts. Noel (a New Yorker at heart) looked at the first biscuit and thought “how funny would it be to poke a hole in these and call them Massholes”. From there we decided to package both the Mass and the Hole in one bag. This served an actual pain point we had as dog parents…the need to buy big treats and smaller training treats.
What sets your business apart from other similar businesses? (defining qualities, practices or approaches)
Masshole & Co. isn’t much different from other small businesses here in town. We want to work hard, provide high-quality products & services, and better the community we live in.
Do you have a goal you want the business to achieve in the next one, 5, or 10 years?
We’d love to still be here slinging biscuits 10 years later.
Why do you love the Greater Cape Ann region and doing business locally?
Doing business in Cape Ann is like no other. People here truly want to help one another and that means cheering on the new guy or the small guy or the underdog.
As someone doing business in this area, how has or how can the Chamber help your business?
Personally we’d love to see more cross-over with the Chamber and other entities in town. Discover Gloucester comes to mind. Additionally, helping small businesses navigate the annoying parts of business i.e. getting monthly parking passes, taxes, dealing with snow, etc.
