Who are you and what is your business?
Melissa Cox Photography – I sell out of Local Colors, 121 Main Street, Gloucester. I also do private sales to local businesses for interior decorations, postcards/greeting cards with your logo and pictures for websites.
Please provide a brief description of your company.
I do nautical and landscape photography. I have a vast selection of local landmarks and schooners to choose from.
What inspired you to start your business and what keeps you going?
I love photography and I love being out on a boat Finding a way to combine them has made a hobby into a business.
What aspect of your business are you most passionate about?
I love connecting a buyer to a memory. I get a lot of people who tell me stories of local landmarks or schooners that bring them joy and they purchase my pictures because they want to have a reminder of that memory.
Is there something unique about your business that you’d like to share that most people wouldn’t know about?
This is a hobby that I was able to make into a business. I grew up in the desert, if you told me 15 years ago that I would be taking pictures of schooners and living on an island, I would have told you that you were out of your mind!
What sets your business apart from other similar businesses?
I’m not doing this as a full-time job which takes the pressure off from running a normal business.
Do you have a goal you want the business to achieve in the next one, 5 or 10 years?
A National Geographic Cover would be amazing but until then I’ll settle for making the Discover Gloucester Cover in 2020 and 2024. I would like to be a “go to” for photography for local businesses. There are so many amazing artists in our region, that buying stock pictures for websites, office space seems crazy to me.
Why do you love the Greater Cape Ann region and doing business locally?
There’s nothing better than driving to a local business to discuss their needs and see their space. Our surroundings are so beautiful that even when we are stuck at the bridge, it can be an opportunity to enjoy the view.
As someone doing business in this area, how has or how can the Chamber help your business?
The Chamber has been great for networking, sharing event notices, meeting new people and seeing familiar faces.
